Outlining and Summary Bars

Milestones offers an easy-to-use outlining capability which lets you organize your projects into steps and sub-steps. Outlining makes the schedule easier to read and manage.

A summary bar displays a single bar from the start date of the earliest sub-task to the end date of the latest sub-task.

Click on the filled triangle to expand to lower levels

Click on the upside-down, hollow triangle to "roll-up" lower level tasks.

You can also use the right click menu of a task row to expand or collapse outline levels

How to Outline

Set-up the column for outline indentation

Click the column heading. The toolbar changes to select the Column Heading.
Click Switch to Column.
For Indent per Outline Level: enter a value (such as 0.3) and then press

NOTE: If you miss the indent step Milestones will send up the Indent Column reminder dialog box when outlining a schedule.

Set the Tab key as the outlining shortcut

Select Tools tab.
In the Program Options section choose Edit.
Check Use the TAB key for outlining.

Indent/Outline a single task

Click once on a task name.
Hit the Tab key or click the right-facing green arrow icon on the Toolbar

Indent/Outline multiple tasks at once

Click once on a task name
Hold down the Ctrl key.
Click once on all other task names to be indented/outlined.
Hit the Tab key or click the right-facing green arrow icon on the Toolbar.

Organize with SmartColumns

Create Outline Level, WBS Number, and TaskNumber SmartColumns

Select Tools tab.
In the Program Options section choose Edit.
Check Use the TAB key for outlining.

Summary Bar Symbology

Set-up Summary Bar Symbology

Choose the Layout tab.
In the Rows, Column section choose New Column.
Choose symbols and a connector to display on all summary bar levels.

Note: For Baseline Summary, choose Layout tab In the Other section choose the
Baseline Settings choose task and summary level symbology for baseline date

The symbols and connectors in the drop-down lists show what is available in the Toolbox. Thus, if the symbols and connector you want are not available, then you'll need to first add them to the Toolbox.

Summary Bar Symbology by Outline Level.

Choose the Format tab.
In the Gridlines section choose Gridlines, Shading, Font Sizes by Outline Level.
Select the Outline Level.
Select the Summary Bar tab choose symbols and connectors to display the summary and baseline summary information for the chosen outline level.

Summary Bar Options

Choose when to have Summary Bars Draw.

Select Layout tab.
In the Other section choose Sumamry Bar Settings.
Select the When to Draw option.

Never - No Summary Bars will be drawn
Only When Rolled Up - Summary Bars will be drawn only when you have colapsed the lower level tasks.
Always - Once you outline the schedule Summary Bar will be drawn

Choose to have Summary Bars replicate the lower level bars and symbols.

Select Layout tab.
In the Other section choose Sumamry Bar Settings.
Check on Split Symmary Bars using Lower Level Symbols/Bars option.

Choose to turn or off lower level options in Sumamry Bars

Select Layout tab.
In the Other section choose Sumamry Bar Settings.
Select to

Have Summary Bars Ingnore Fill to Staus Settings.
Hide Dates on the Summary for Rolled up Symbols
Hide Text on the Summary Bar of Rolled up Symbols
Turn on or off Computed Values in SmartColumns for the Summary Level.

Roll Symobls up to Summary Bar

Roll Up Specific Symbols to Specific Summary Bar Levels.

Select the symbol on the schedule to be rolled up to the summary bar.
The toolbar will change to selected item click on the Summary tab.
Choose to have the symbol

Included on symbol on all Summary Bar levels.
Include symbol on the Summary Bar level selected.
Donot include the symbol on a summary bar.
