Create a Percent
Complete SmartColumn |
 |
| |
-
Choose Insert | Column |
Percent Complete
-
Then, the Percent Complete Settings
dialog appears
-
Include Percent Complete Symbol in column.
(optional)
-
For Percent Symbol, you may
choose any symbol from the Toolbox that is not being used, and that
symbol will be converted to symbol type #97. If a symbol of
type #97 already exists in the Toolbox, it will be used by default.
-
Choose a Symbol Size
-
Choose left, right or center alignment for the symbol.
Once you have completed the setup, you
should see a column similar to the Percent Complete column shown to
the right, and in the example below. The example column uses the
optional percent complete symbol. Other options include
showing a decimal point on the value, showing the symbol only, or
not showing the percent complete symbol. |

Percent Complete and Summary Bars |
| |
|
If your schedule is outlined, summary bars can be
used to display the overall percent complete. In the example below,
the first task line is a summary bar for the entire project. It shows
that the entire project is 58% complete. This value is the result of the total
number of completed days divided by the total number of work days scheduled. |

| |
To turn on summary bars:
- Choose Format | Summary
Bar Settings
- Under "When to Draw"
choose either Always or Only When Rolled Up.
Now that summary bars are
active, tasks can be collapsed or expanded by right-clicking any
task line and choosing either "Collapse Selected Task Line" or
"Expand Selected Task Line." |

|
Turn on/off the
fill-to-status for summary bars |
| |
|
When fill-to-status
options are turned on (Format | Dates | Connectors-Fill to Status),
summary bars will show a progress fill. However, the fill
amount is based on the percent complete of the total time span for
the project. This means that even if all project steps are
shown to be "on schedule," the summary bar status may be behind the
current date.
Though it is
technically accurate, you may not want your summary bars to display
percent complete. To turn this setting off for summary bars so that
they are filled completely:
- Choose Format | Summary Bar Settings.
- Check Summary Bars Ignore Fill to Status Setting.

Percent Complete and
Status symbols |
| |
|
A special "status" symbol can be used to easily
and accurately adjust your project's progress. |
|
|
|
Create
a status symbol: |
- In your toolbox,
double-click any symbol you are not using.
- Under the
Symbol Shape
tab, choose Status
Symbol (used for Percent Complete).
- Choose a Standard Shape to your liking.
|
|
Add a status symbol to a task
line: |
- In the toolbox, click once on the Plus tool.
- In the toolbox, click once on the Status symbol that you just
created.
- On the schedule, drag-and-drop the Status symbol.
To adjust the
status symbol, use the Arrow tool and drag the status symbol to a new
date. As you move the
Status symbol, the percent
complete value in the SmartColumn will update automatically.
Alternately, you can use the Text tool to change the
percent value in the SmartColumn, and the status symbol will move
accordingly. |

Accuracy and
Percent Complete |
|
|
|
On some shorter schedules, you may experience
difficulty with percent complete accuracy. For example, if your
schedule is only 10 days, you may find that when you enter a percent
complete, the percent complete is adjusted to reflect a whole
percentage point based on the nearest day.
This is easily remedied by turning on
hourly/minute detail. Turning on this extra level of detail enables
Milestones Professional to base its percent complete calculations on
minutes rather than days and is especially useful for schedules which
are shorter than 1 year. |
|
|
|
To turn on hourly/minute detail, choose Format
| Dates | Schedule Details, then click the
Hourly/Minute tab and check
Allow Hourly Detail and
Allow Minute Detail. |
|
|
|
|
|
|
Percent Complete
and the Single Milestone |
|
|
|
Duration for tasks with single milestones is
computed differently when hourly/minute detail is turned on than when
hourly/minute detail is turned off. When hourly/minute detail is turned on,
a single milestone will have a duration of 0. When hourly/minute
detail is turned off, a single milestone will have a duration of 1
day. This has an impact on percent
complete. A duration of 0 will result in a percent complete of 0 no
matter if the symbol is before or after the current date (or status
date). If you have this situation and need the
milestone to represent one day, or some number of hours, just add a
second symbol to the task line that is one day after the milestone.
