Installation under Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows Server 2008 |

| For Milestones versions 2006 and prior, under Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows Server 2008 it may be necessary to take an extra step when entering registration information such as Serial Numbers and Program Keys. Since this information is stored in a common area of the computer’s registry, it is necessary to that the program updating this information be run at an elevated level. |
|
If you need to enter a Milestones program key or serial number, then
when starting Milestones in preparation for doing this, first locate
the miles.exe** program file on your computer. Normally this is at
C:\Program Files\KIDASA\Milestones …\System, as shown in the example
below. Then right-click on the Miles Application entry and
selecting Run as administrator.
** (If running Simplicity, the file name is milesimp.exe.) |

When you do this, the User Account Control dialog appears, announcing that a program needs your permission to continue. Press Continue to allow Milestones to start up.
Once in Milestones, proceed to the Help | About | Program Key screen and enter your Program Key. Press OK and then on the next screen update your Serial Number if needed. Why would the above steps be needed? Normally, they are not. If you entered your Program Key and Serial Number during installation and allowed Milestones to start at the end of the installation, all the above registry settings would have been made during the automatic Admin elevation that happens during installation. However, if you installed Milestones as an Evaluation copy, then later purchased, you would need to do the above, since it is now Milestones itself that will be updating the registry with your license information, and not the installation program. Other Places that Milestones may Require Elevation Every time Milestones starts up, it checks to ensure that it has the Milestones Color Themes installed. If not then Milestones starts Regedit to merge in the Color Themes. If a User Account Control box appears just after Milestones startup, wanting to run the Regedit.exe program, you should press Continue to OK the request. First pressing the Details button will show what registry file is to be merged.
Once the Color Themes have been loaded, this prompt will never appear again. Rereg.exe Program If you ever need to run the rereg.exe program, also located in the Milestones system folder, you will also need to run it as an administrator, since it needs to update a common area of the registry where Milestones file associations and COM associations are stored.
Press Allow to enable the rereg.exe program to run. Normally it is never necessary to run rereg.exe since once the installation program creates the needed file and COM associations they stay and do not need to be recreated. |
