  Earned value management (EVM) measures cost, schedule and work and measure's progress toward the accomplishment of a project's goals.

EVM makes monitoring the project's progress more accurate, making it easier to determine if the project is in trouble with respect to money spent (is the project going to run out of money before it is finished?)  If Earned Value methodology is implemented and projects are monitored, projects are less likely to get in trouble and troubled projects can be spotted earlier than with other methods.
