Baseline Scheduling

This article refers to version 2006.  Click for Version 2008

Baseline scheduling is a great way to show how your original schedule compares to the actual schedule. With Milestones Professional, you can set-up Baseline Start, End and Duration SmartColumns.

Using the Baseline Setup Wizard, you can establish your baseline symbology for the summary lines and task lines. Other baseline options are to highlight, hide and lock the Baseline information.

Schedule Example

Creating Baseline Symbology

Using the Baseline Setup Wizard, you can establish standard symbology for the task level and summary level.

To create standard baseline symbols and connectors:

  1. Choose Format | Baseline Setup.

  2. Follow the Wizard's instructions as you choose symbols and connectors to show baseline.

  3. To change any symbol to a baseline symbol:

  4. Double-click a symbol in the toolbox.

  5. Click the Symbol Shape tab.

  6. Choose Baseline Symbol.

  7. Click OK.

Create Baseline Start, End , and Duration SmartColumns

The Baseline Start SmartColumn displays the date of the earliest baseline symbol on the task line, while the Baseline End SmartColumn displays the latest baseline symbol date on the task line.

When you click-drag-and-drop the symbols and connectors, the dates appear in these SmartColumns. Or, you can enter the dates in the SmartColumns and the baseline symbols and connectors will be drawn for you.

  1. Choose Insert | Column.

  2. Select either Baseline Start, Baseline End, or Baseline Duration from the list of available column types

OR, to change an existing column to one of the available Baseline SmartColumns:

  1. Double click the Column Heading cell.

  2. Click the SmartColumn Settings tab.

  3. Under SmartColumn Definition, choose Baseline Start (or Baseline End, or Baseline Duration).

When you enter the baseline start date, a symbol is drawn on the schedule, according to the symbology created using the Baseline Setup Wizard. Then, when you enter the baseline end date, a connector and end symbol are drawn on the schedule. The Baseline Duration SmartColumn totals the length of time between the duration start and end dates.

Lock, highlight, show/hide baseline, show/hide baseline summary bars

When locked, the baseline symbols cannot be moved. To do this, choose View | Baseline | Lock Baseline.

To highlight the baseline symbols and connectors, choose View | Baseline | Highlight Baseline.

To hide baseline symbols and connectors, choose View | Baseline | Show Baseline so that Show Baseline is not checked.

To hide baseline summary bars, choose View | Baseline | Hide Baseline Summary Bars.
